There are different kinds of time. and there are times when we enter into flow state and experience timelessness. And then there are times when we’re watching the pot. And it doesn’t seem to boil.
Perhaps our experience of time is relative after all, because indeed, it is subjective to our experience. And yet time is not just a construct, because the sun rises and sets and creates a time of light and dark and today, new moon and eclipse energies.
Time is with us, and there’s a term that means time with us called chronos, not the Greek god, Kronos, although it is a Greek word. And it means “in time”. It’s a particular kind of rhythm, but over time with the way that the world has been moving, with the 9 to five work week, with the weekends, with retail promotions, with the changing of the calendar from the moon calendar. We’ve really hijacked linear time, Chronos, and now we sort of are subject to it and how it’s operating.
The invitation in our work together our 33 plus year old community is an invitation to step out of the dominance of industrial time and chronos and into kairos, God, goddess time, synchronicity time, right in time a rhythm that honors, yes, the cycles of the moon and the rising and setting of the sun and the wheel of the year that we celebrate here in the council, the eight ceremonies of the year that people for thousands of years have celebrated. Kairos is an experience, an experience in liminality, an experience of flow state, where timelessness and richness increase and a feeling even of beyond the self, like a selflessness, not as if you disappeared necessarily, but as if you’re actually just right in there in a way that perhaps you aren’t when you’re in the chronos time.
My strong developing theory over these years of working with tens of thousands of people is that we must have kairos. We must engage in ceremonial time. This allows us to empty some of the toxic load if we do it consciously and allows us to slow down and experience the pleasure that’s available when we leave the timeline of chronos and enter the timelessness of kairos. There’s also this idea that chronos is about volume, in a way it’s about quantity how much of this and we say things like spending time and wasting time and making time where kairos is about quality. It is about an experience.
