Fly me to the moon
Let me play among the stars
And let me see what spring is like on
A-Jupiter and Mars
In other words
Hold my hand
In other words
Baby, kiss me
Fill my heart with song
And let me sing forever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore

Dear Ones,
I really really LOVE how excited we all get when there is a full moon, a super moon and a blue moon and today offers all three! No matter who you are or where you live, or what tradition you practice, or who you are with at the time ~ when you see that moon in the sky…you notice it, you may often gasp and point…. !! There is moon amazement in humans!!! I love this! A sense of awe and wonder. A common ground of WOW.
Will you watch the moon tonight? Make a point of it!
Moon was my first word, said while being on the shoulders of Sue Hoya Sellars - she pointed and said": moooooon mooooooon moooooon and of course, I replied, and, I was born on the full moon in June of 1970 while the mimosa bloomed in Northern California, where I live today.
Today we celebrate the Full Super Blue Moon, this can be found on the Wheel of the Year Poster (if you are a subscriber you can find a downloadable version on the Cura Dashboard).
Why Blue Moon and why 13? Let’s talk. A Blue Moon Happens when there are two full moons in one month which is why there are 13 moons and not 12 in the calendar year.
There should be 13 moons if you ask me and my wild bunch of women. Lots of nuance to be found on this, but I must wax poetic when I imagine an actual calendar based on the actual moon…and how much I wish we all lived in rhythm with nature and honoring the presence of the moon’s influence on our lives. Here in our community we often focus on moons and seasons, hence our Wheel of the Year focus which helps us feel a sense of place in all of creation, sacred time and place. And besides without the moon there would be no humans on this earth so….let us sing the praises of the moon. The moon is in sooooo many song….clearly we humans are in love with the moon and perhaps, the moon is in love with us.
The turtle, sacred to Indigenous people everywhere, has 13 places upon their shell, said to hold the world on their back. Depending on what stories you study you may find that many cultures called Earth itself, Turtle Island, and specifically North America.
There are many stories about turtle and moon…and each one has a bit of a different angle…some arise from the idea of earth rising out of sea, like a turtle back rises out of water. Explore the mythologies according to your curiousities - yet there is no denying the sacred 13 on the back of the turtle.
Turtle, was the spirit animal of my mother Caron and my father Greg. I have a soapstone my mother carried, a gift from him, carved with the 13, evidence of their connection. The night I was conceived, evidently, they walked out in the moonlight, naked in cowboy boots in Forest Knolls, California. I can see them now…can you? They must have known I was coming onto the scene…
Count them….thirteen… 13 moons which the names are all based in what is happening in the seasons around them - and this one of course, is Blue as all two full moons in a month are called.
These are the EDT time zones, link at the top has a way to find the sunrise and set where you live.
The story goes that it is called a Blue Moon because it’s rare. Some attribute it to ancient folklore, others to a modern terms that just got repeated a lot. But there are other colors too which don’t have as much to do with how it actually looks: A second new moon in one month is called a black moon, and April’s full moon is called a pink moon, but I do often think it looks pink!
“While the term ‘Blue Moon’ might have originated from the Moon literally appearing blue in colour, it is now used in the metaphorical sense, and refers to the rare occurrence of seeing the Moon fully illuminated by sunshine – a Full Moon – twice in the same calendar month,” says Dr. Darrin Baskill, an astronomer lecturer at the University of Sussex.” from Science Focus
Dr. Baskill says this about why it may have gotten the term, Blue” “When light passes through the atmosphere, blue light scatters more than red light. In other words, blue bends best! This is why the sky is blue; blue light from the Sun is scattered around the sky.
This effect, what's known as the Rayleigh scattering, also causes the Sun and Moon to appear red when they are low in the sky – their light passes through the thicker part of the atmosphere, amplifying the scattering of blue light away until only the red hues remain…”
Cool right? Finally the answer to why the sky is blue :) too!
Moon Giant offers these times and other sites offer other times, depending on rise and set focus - and also the best time to SEE the full moon fullest where you are. I HOPE* through connection with the Cura Council you will begin to really NOTICE the path of the moon around where you live, and where you can see it when it first comes into view where you live. For us us at MUSEA Center, it is right down the road coming up over the hills….
Here’s a little Blue Moon geekiness: According to NASA “Just 3% of full moons are blue moons, according to NASA, while 25% of full moons are supermoons. This is BOTH! Exciting right? We think so! The Farmer’s Almanac says: this is the closest, biggest, and brightest Moon of the entire year.
This moon is exceptionally close in Moon miles from Earth (222,043 miles). The next time we’ll have a closer full Supermoon is November 5, 2025, when the moon lies 221,817 miles from Earth.
A supermoon exceeds the disk size of an average-sized Moon by up to 8% and the brightness of an average-sized full Moon by some 16%. You may not perceive the difference in size, but a supermoon will appear brighter in the sky.
A Supermoon can also cause higher tides than usual.
(Beware mermaids!)
The full blue moon will be rising over the eastern horizon in the in the constellation of Aquarius right after sunset tonight…about 7:10 p.m. EDT (2310 GMT). The Super Blue Moon will set right before sunrise on Thursday, Aug. 31 at around 06:46 EDT (1046 GMT). How they determine the exact moment of a moon being full is the moment it is exactly opposite the sun, in today’s case, this will be a 180-degree separation.
Supermoons happen due to the moon’s orbit around the Earth is elliptical, not circular as we may think, so there are times during the moon’s orbit when it is further away called ‘at opogee’ and when like now when it is closer ‘at perigree’.
Even with a full bright night you may be able to see this if you are above the equator, three bright stars—Vega, Deneb and Altair—the “Summer Triangle” - which is an asterism…Look for it….
BTW The next Super Full Moon like this won’t happen until 2037 - so let’s honor this celestial happening together - I will be at a dear friend’s birthday at the ocean.
I am also saying prayers for those who are in the path of the hurricane…..because reports indicate that this super moon, could intensify the storm. Prayers flowing now….
Moon impacts all of us in so many seen and unseen ways - and today is the day we see it and….feel it. Do you feel it?
In our life, we like to reflect the natural rhythms in our inner world and our outer world, so this Blue Door below, just painted yesterday is our Blue Moon door and symbolizes great change for us as a couple in how we are approaching our life. Isn’t it pretty? A portal to our home of rest and well being - we call it the 5 Seasons - and the 5th season is the one we are in at any given moment….
What are you present to this full moon? What is tugging on your heart? If you are in the Red Thread Cafe Classroom on FB, I have posted there. If you are in the imusea app, I have also posted there.
Much love to you dear ones, the Meditation is at the bottom. Find a comfy place to sit and listen in… XOX
